Halle Berry Child Custody Dispute Resolved

On Behalf of | Apr 26, 2011 | Child Custody

For many people, stories about celebrities — including the disputes they are involved in — make for great reading at purely an entertainment level. Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan come quickly to mind.

In other instances, their entanglements with the police, prosecutors or judicial process are instructive because the ensured wide public dissemination of the relevant details can serve to inform a large number of people on matters that are far from unique to the celebrities themselves. In other words, the stories often take on an educative function when the matter under the media microscope can similarly affect people from all walks of life.

Halle Berry is certainly a case in point. The actress has been embroiled for many months in a contentious child custody dispute with her ex-partner, Gabriel Aubry, with the couple’s three-year-old daughter being the central focus of their differences.

After the couple separated last year, Aubry filed court papers to establish paternity and his legal rights as a father, seeking joint physical and legal custody of the child. Berry countered with stated concerns regarding Aubry’s abilities as a father and sought sole custody of the couple’s daughter, with limited visitation rights for Aubry.

Apparently, time has worked to lessen the acrimony that has marked the proceedings, with Berry announcing last week that the couple has settled their differences peacefully. ‘When there’s a child involved, it’s a relief when you can resolve things in a good way,” she said.

Although the details of the couple’s agreement were not readily available, they certainly include a central role for Aubry as the father. ‘We both know a child needs both her parents,” said Berry.

Berry noted that she and Aubry needed the judicial process to help them “work out some of the delicate issues.”

Child custody disputes are obviously not confined to actresses and other celebrities, but engage the general population in all parts of the country. Persons living in Miami-Dade County and throughout the South Beach area who have questions relating to child custody or other family law matters should contact an experienced family law attorney.
