Who is more likely to file for divorce, men or women?

On Behalf of | Dec 23, 2022 | Divorce

In the United States, it is often said that half of all marriages end in divorce, so you can see that this is quite a common process. The fact that people no longer have to prove fault in order to get a divorce has really changed things so that divorce happens more often. People today have more options to choose the life they want and the marriage they want than they have in the past.

What you might be wondering is, in a heterosexual marriage, if a man or woman is more likely to file for divorce. Are there any gender differences? Is your spouse more likely or less likely to ask for a divorce than you are?

Women file more often

Studies consistently find that women file for divorce more often than men do. They also report a high level of satisfaction in their post-divorce life, which may show why they are so likely to do so.

One of the main reasons given for this pattern is just mismatches between couples. Once they got married, they realized that it wasn’t quite the perfect fit. There could have been problems with financial resources, for example, or issues with childcare and taking care of the home. In many cases, women feel like they are asked to do far more than men, and a woman who is in a relationship like this may be much more likely to want to end it.

Do you want to file for divorce?

Since divorce is easier than it has been before, women feel more freedom to seek out the relationships they want – and to leave those that don’t live up to their standards. If you are interested in filing for a divorce this year, just take the time to carefully look into all the necessary legal steps.
