Tension and co-parenting: How to make things better

When it comes to co-parenting, you know one thing to be true: Tension will likely always be in the air.

While this may be the case at first, you can make things better over time. With the right approach, it's possible that you could eliminate some of the tension as to make life easier on all parties involved.

Here are some of the many tips to follow:

  • Settle on a co-parenting plan as soon as possible. With this in place, both parents will know what is expected of them.
  • Move forward one step at a time. When heavy tension settles in, don't get too far ahead of yourself. Deal with what you have on your plate before moving onto something else.
  • Consider your entire family one team. Even though you are no longer married, it doesn't mean you can't work closely with your spouse to ensure the best possible life for your child.
  • Make changes as necessary. What works today may not work tomorrow, so you should be comfortable adjusting your approach to co-parenting along the way.

Tension is always part of the divorce and co-parenting process, but there are small things you can do to make things easier on yourself.

Once you realize that divorce is coming, you should turn your attention to the ways this will impact you in the future. With the right approach early on, such as putting plenty of effort into creating a parenting plan, you can do your part in reducing the potential of future problems. So, while you focus on your legal rights and what's best for you, don't lose sight of the future.
