Child custody: The Gosselins struggle with parenting plan

On Behalf of | Nov 1, 2013 | Child Custody

After spending several years in the limelight on their family’s reality TV show, Jon and Kate Gosselin were involved in a very public divorce battle. The couple had initially gained attention for their amicable relationship while dealing with the stresses of parenting eight children, including sextuplets. In getting divorced, however, the couple was confronted with the task of creating a child custody arrangement.

In a recent interview, Jon Gosselin reflected on his current relationship with his ex-wife. He commented that things are still rather strained between the two. Most communications are simply about the logistics of their custody arrangement, and the couple has difficulty agreeing on important aspects of parenting.

Even though a couple may legally end their marital relationship, they will likely need to maintain some sort of working relationship if they have children. With a joint custody agreement, parents might have to work out exchanges and discuss the day-to-day aspects of parenting. Creating a mutually agreeable parenting plan can help accomplish this task.

Jon Gosselin pointed out that he and Kate have big differences in their parenting philosophies, which makes it difficult to maintain a more friendly relationship. Both of them love their children, but they have disagreements about how to raise them. Many Florida parents might run into the same situation.

Child custody and parenting plans are aspects of divorce should be handled with the best interests of the children in mind. By considering a civil approach to settling these issues, couples can set the foundation for a healthy long-term relationship as parents.
