Troublesome mistakes when asking for a prenuptial agreement

Your wedding day is closing in and you realize that you have yet to discuss the creation of a prenuptial agreement with your soon-to-be spouse. While you still have time, you know that you have to dive into this conversation as soon as possible.

On the plus side, once you get your thoughts into the open, you’re in better position to put the creation of a prenuptial agreement in the past.

Conversely, you realize that any mistakes during this conversation can add stress to your life.

Here are three mistakes that often cause trouble when asking for a prenuptial agreement:

  • Issuing demands: This isn’t what a prenuptial agreement is all about. Rather than issue demands, have a meaningful conversation with your partner about why you want to create a prenuptial agreement.
  • Hiding your fears: Your partner is much more likely to understand your stance if you share your fears and the reason why you want a prenuptial agreement.
  • Letting your anger takeover: It may be difficult to remain calm if your partner is questioning your intentions, but anger is not going to solve your problem.

One of the best ways to prevent these mistakes is to leave yourself plenty of time to work through the creation of a prenuptial agreement. The more time you have before your wedding the easier it is to move through the process without tension.

Once you create a prenuptial agreement that both individuals are happy with, you can look back and realize that all the hard work was well worth the time.
