As you go through a divorce, you’ll begin to think about what the future will bring in regards to communication with your soon-to-be ex-spouse.

If you don’t have any children together, there may be no reason to communicate. However, if you have at least one child with the person, successful co-parenting is an absolute must. This is where the right communication strategy comes into play.

Here are three steps you can take to improve the way you communicate with your ex:

  • Change your approach: When you adjust what you do, you can also change the response you get from your ex. For example, the nicer you are, the better chance there is that your ex will treat you the same way.
  • Eliminate extra conversations: You understand the importance of communicating with your ex in regards to your child. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to talk about other things, such as his or her new love interest or career.
  • Accept the fact that the other person doesn’t want to play nice: No matter how hard you try, your ex may not want to get along. You need to accept this, all the while focusing on doing what’s best for your child.

These are the types of steps you can take to better communicate with your ex, all with the idea of establishing a solid co-parenting foundation.

If the other parent’s lack of communication is causing issues, such as those related to your parenting agreement, you may need to consider your legal options to ensure a better future.
