Before you decide for or against divorce, you need to make a list of the many pros and cons of moving forward with the process.

In short, you need to know exactly what divorce can do for you.

In simple terms, divorce allows you to put a bad marriage in the past. If this is the only thing you care about, you won’t have any problem moving forward and realizing that things will get better in time.

However, there are other things divorce can do for you. Here are just a few:

  • Property division. With divorce, you can decide who gets what. If you opt for mediation, you’ll be able to work this out with your former spouse. If not, a divorce court will step in to handle the process.
  • Child support and alimony. This isn’t part of every divorce, but it may be something you have to deal with. Without the divorce process, you may never think about these two things.
  • Child custody. The divorce process typically results in one person obtaining physical custody, with the other parent getting visitation. All of the details will be worked out during your divorce.

As you can see, divorce can help you finalize and formalize a variety of high-level details that are sure to impact your life in a number of ways.

If you’re on board with the idea that you need to work these things out, divorce may be the best way to move forward. Despite the many challenges, when everything is over and done with, you’ll realize you’re in a better spot.
