If you’ve come to the conclusion that divorce is in your future, you need to decide how to move forward with the process.

While you may have reason to believe that your case will eventually end up in court, you don’t want to head down this path until you first understand the benefits of mediation.

While divorce mediation doesn’t work for everyone, it has been proven successful time and time again.

With this approach, you hope to accomplish the following goals:

  • Create an equitable divorce agreement in a timely manner
  • Avoid the high expense typically associated with litigation
  • Minimize bad feelings between you and your former spouse

As you work toward these goals, there’s something important to remember: Mediation gives you more control over every aspect of the process.

With litigation, you have the opportunity to state your case, but the judge makes final decisions. With mediation, however, you and the other individual will work together, with the help of a mediator, to work through your differences. This doesn’t mean it will be easy, but having a greater voice will definitely put you in a better position.

With so many benefits, it makes sense to learn more about mediation before heading to court. As long as both individuals are truly interested in making it work, there’s a good chance that you can settle all your differences.

Although mediation is different than litigation, you still need to understand that you are making important decisions. This is why you need to learn more about your legal rights and only proceed in a manner that you’re comfortable with.
