Many people go into marriage hoping that their union lasts forever. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always happen. Instead, millions upon millions of people have gone through the divorce process.

Since you never know what the future holds, there’s nothing wrong with considering the benefits of a prenuptial agreement. Once you discuss this with your soon-to-be spouse, you may realize that it’s one of the best steps you can take before your wedding day.

In short, a prenuptial agreement allows you to protect your assets and avoid assuming any debt from your partner. If you don’t have one of these in place, your spouse may be entitled to:

— Receive ownership of property obtained during the marriage

— Receive some or all of your property upon your death

— Share responsibilities regarding the management of property acquired during the marriage

There are many reasons to consider a prenuptial agreement. For example, if you’re bringing a substantial amount of assets into the marriage, you don’t want to risk losing some of these if you divorce in the future.

Also, a prenuptial agreement is a great way to protect any children you have from a previous marriage. For example, you may want to pass your property onto these children upon your death.

There is no law stating that you have to create a prenuptial agreement, but it’s a good idea to consider the benefits of doing so. Once you realize what this can do for both parties, you may find that it’s a step you have to take far in advance of your big day.
