Man fails to pay thoussands in child support, turns himself in

When it comes to divorce, some of the most difficult resolutions often center around children or money. Decisions about child support combine both considerations, so it's not surprising that it can be a difficult topic to discuss and come to an agreement on. That's one reason why the legal system has so many fail safes and processes associated with support and support agreements.

No matter what happens with a child support case, one of the worst things a person can do is simply fail to make child support payments. The legal system allows for the fact that someone may agree to pay a certain amount of support and then see circumstances change. Individuals who can no longer make support payments -- or feel that agreed-upon or ordered payments are no longer valid -- can seek assistance through child support modification requests and other legal means.

One Florida man apparently avoided legal channels regarding his child support payments. As of a recent arrest, he reportedly owed $233,539 in support. The man also crossed state lines, which meant the case could be federally prosecuted.

According to reports, the man was informed in April that federal prosecution was being considered. The reason for the consideration was that the man allegedly crossed state lines as part of support order disobedience.

The 52-year-old man reportedly turned himself into authorities in another state on July 16. According to a family court order, the man must pay the outstanding child support or spend 60 days in jail. Even if the man serves the jail time, he'll likely not be off the hook for child support owed.

When failure to make support payments can mean additional fines or jail time, it's usually better to seek a legal solution to problems. Running away from support -- or any divorce or marital issue -- usually makes the problems bigger in the long run.
