Celebrities divorce after 9 years of marriage

Almost every new couple in Miami, Florida, or elsewhere in the nation, hears the saying "the first year is the hardest" during their wedding season. Despite common wisdom, not every couple that makes it through the first year makes it forever.

People grow and change over time, and those changes sometimes result in irreconcilable differences that make a marriage unhappy or less functional than it was in the past. In such cases, a divorce can address issues of property division, child custody and child support, leaving both parties free to seek a more satisfactory future without completely destroying relationships with children or financial security.

Celebrities who were married for nine years are reportedly going through a divorce due to irreconcilable differences. Will Arnett, who stars on CBS's "The Millers," and Amy Poehler, who stars on NBC's "Parks and Recreation," are divorcing. Prior to Arnett filing for divorce, the couple had been separated for 18 months.

The couple originally married in 2003. They have two children, who are boys ages 5 and 3. According to reports, the couple split unofficially in September 2012.

People Magazine reported that Arnett filed for divorce on April 8. His filing reportedly includes a request for joint custody of the two boys.

Many people consider celebrity lives separate and different from those of average Americans. During a divorce, however, many issues remain the same. It's important for any couple to understand what they want going into a divorce. When filing divorce petitions, laying out well-defined requirements for support, custody and property division is an essential step in ensuring a positive outcome of the divorce.
