Issues to think about early in the divorce process

On Behalf of | Feb 21, 2019 | Divorce

Divorce is complicated on many fronts. Not only does it change your finances, but it can also impact your physical and mental health in a number of ways. Fortunately, when you know what to expect during the divorce process, you can plan accordingly.

There are many issues that require your attention, both as you prepare for divorce and as you work through the process. Here are some of the areas to devote your attention to:

  • Issues involving your children: These include but are not limited to: child custody (both physical and legal), child support, visitation schedule for the non-custodial parent and visitation with extended family.
  • Issues involving property: In addition to property division, debt also moves to the forefront during the divorce process. A property and debt division checklist can help you prepare for this part of your divorce.
  • Spousal support: This doesn’t always come into play, but if it does, you’ll have to determine who receives support, how long it will last and how much will be paid.

Along with the above, you should collect any and every document that may be required. This can include things such as tax returns, bank statements, mortgage statements, prenuptial agreement and a monthly budget worksheet. With so many potential issues, you need to prepare for everything so that you don’t run into any surprises.

There’s no way of knowing exactly what will happen during the divorce process. However, when you prepare yourself upfront, it’s easier to feel good about the direction you’re headed. The proper preparation can also save you time and money along the way.
