Divorce and your work life: things to consider

Divorce will impact your personal life in many ways. However, you should also consider the impact it will have on your professional life. If you don't plan for this, you may be surprised at the toll it takes on your career.

In a perfect world, you'd be able to separate your personal and professional lives. In the real world, however, this is easier said than done. Here are some things that can help you at work as you go through your divorce:

  • Tell your supervisor. You want this person to be in the loop, especially if you think you'll have to take time away from work.
  • Talk to human resources (HR). There are many HR changes you'll need to make after your divorce. For example, you may no longer need to purchase health insurance for both you and your spouse. There may also be changes regarding your retirement and other benefits.
  • Don't make a rash decision. Divorce may lead you to make some serious life changes. Before you quit your job, think long and hard about why you're doing so.
  • Take mental health days. There will be times when you just aren't up to going to work. You need to take days for your mental health, as pushing the limit can have serious long-term effects on your well being.

Even though divorce will alter your life, you need to work through the process in an efficient manner. This means knowing how to handle your career during this challenging time.

Focusing on the divorce process as a whole, including what you can do to ease the stress, will allow you to put it in the past soon enough.
