Don’t make these mistakes when asking for a divorce

On Behalf of | Nov 3, 2017 | Divorce

There will be a lot going through your mind if you come to the conclusion that you need to ask your spouse for a divorce. While you may have some questions to answer in the future, the first thing you should do is create a plan for bringing your feelings to the forefront.

Here are some of the many mistakes you don’t want to make when asking for a divorce:

  • Choosing the wrong time to have the conversation. This isn’t something you tell your spouse while you’re on vacation or having a family dinner.
  • Blurting out your intentions without thinking it through. You need to realize the impact that divorce will have on your life.
  • Becoming angry with your spouse. Even though you may be disappointed, you shouldn’t let this turn into anger. It will only make things worse on both individuals.
  • Putting your safety at risk. If you know your spouse could become angry and potentially violent, you need to ask for a divorce in a public place or over the phone. There is nothing more important than your safety.

Along with the above, you should never use the word “divorce” unless you are completely serious about moving forward. There is never a good time to use this as a threat.

If you want to ask for a divorce, plan out the conversation and know exactly what you want to say. Once you have this out of the way, you can then turn your attention to the process itself and the steps you can take to protect your legal rights.
