Here are some things a prenuptial agreement can do for you

On Behalf of | Oct 4, 2017 | Prenuptial Agreements

If you are having thoughts about asking your soon to be spouse to sign a prenuptial agreement, you need to bring this to light as soon as possible.

There are many things a prenuptial agreement can do for both individuals, so it makes good sense to sit down and discuss the finer details.

Maybe you end up moving forward with the process. Or maybe you end up holding off on this. Either way, if your wedding day is closing in, you should at least review the many benefits of a prenuptial agreement. These can include but are not limited to the following:

  • Protect any property that you bring into the marriage
  • Protect the inheritance rights of children from a former marriage
  • Protect your interest in a business or professional practice
  • Protect one spouse from the debt that the other is bringing into the marriage
  • To ensure that you are compensated in the future (in the event of a divorce) if you are giving up a lucrative career after tying the knot
  • To limit the amount of alimony that a spouse may have to pay the other

These are not the only benefits of a prenuptial agreement, but they are among the most important. When you keep these in mind during your discussion, you and your partner may agree that a prenuptial agreement is the best way to proceed.

Since there are things you can and can’t include in a prenuptial agreement, you need to give yourself plenty of time to work through all the details. Knowing the legal side of this document will ensure that you don’t make any mistakes along the way.

Not every couple signs a prenuptial agreement, but there is no harm in considering the benefits.
