How will you prepare to tell your child about your divorce?

On Behalf of | Sep 20, 2017 | Divorce

If you have a child with your soon-to-be ex-spouse, there may come a time when you have to discuss the divorce process with him or her (depending on his or her age).

There are many things you need to say and do, so it’s important that you take the right approach from the start.

Here are some of the many things you can do to prepare to tell your child about your divorce:

  • Write down what you want to say. With some notes in hand, it’s much easier to have this difficult conversation, as you won’t have to concern yourself with getting lost.
  • Do it at the right time. You need to have this important conversation at the right time, such as when you are alone and able to focus.
  • Think like your child. Even though you’re the adult, you need to think like your child so that you know how he or she may be feeling.
  • Be open and honest. There is no point in hiding what’s truly going on. Be open and honest during this conversation, so that your child has a clear idea of where things stand.

These are just a few of the many things you can do as you prepare to tell your child about your divorce.

While you focus your time and attention on this, don’t lose sight of the divorce process itself. You need to push things forward in the appropriate manner, all the while understanding your legal rights. This will ensure that you make informed and confident decisions.
