On Behalf of | Feb 15, 2017 | Child Support

Are you required to pay child support? Have you stayed current with your payments in the past? Do you have reason to believe that you will fall behind in the future?

If you find yourself in this position, it’s time to learn more about the child support modification process. There is no guarantee that the court will agree with you, but there are steps you can take to put you in position to have your payments lowered in the future.

— Act sooner, not later. Once you realize that you need a child support modification, it’s time to take action.

— Inform yourself of state laws. You must have a clear idea of how to request a modification in your state. Along with this, you should learn more about how the court will review your situation.

— Speak with the other parent. This may be a difficult step to take, but opening the lines of communication can make your life much easier.

— Pay as much as you can. Even if you are unable to make the full monthly payment, pay as much as you can to show that you’re not trying to game the system.

— Document your change. What is your reason for requesting a child support modification? For example, if you’ve become seriously ill, document all of your medical expenses.

The last thing that you have to do is file the appropriate paperwork with the family law court in your jurisdiction. By taking this step, it won’t be long before you have a clear idea of what you will owe in the future.
