Paternity suit, support demand dropped against Michael Jordan

Famed basketball player Michael Jordan has been involved previously in high-profile family law matters, including his 2006 divorce from ex-spouse Juanita Jordan. That dissolution reportedly involved a property division settlement that awarded Juanita Jordan nearly $170 million.

Another legal matter involving Jordan was dismissed just yesterday in Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta following a woman's decision to drop a paternity lawsuit she had filed against Jordan last month for child support.

The woman claimed in that filing that Jordan was the father of her 16-year-old son, and that she sought a legal resolution to the matter because her son "has had an issue with it over the years."

Following the woman's suit, Jordan promptly counterclaimed, providing evidence from a 2003 divorce case that the young man's father is the ex-spouse of the woman. Reportedly, the woman acknowledged that to be the case during her divorce. Jordan's claim sought sanctions against the petitioner for making false claims against him.

The parties convened in court last week for a status hearing on the case (Jordan was not personally present). Apparently, yesterday's announcement concerning dismissal was an outgrowth of what was discussed at that hearing.

Following the announcement, the woman's attorney stated that the case is not officially over, since it has not been definitively settled. The dismissal was "without prejudice," meaning that the suit can be refiled later.

Unsurprisingly, conjecture surfaced following the dismissal centering on whether private negotiations yielded a confidential agreement resulting in the woman's decision to stop her case. There was no media confirmation concerning that point.
