Surprise: Ex-NBA great Rodman back in court on child support matter

On Behalf of | Dec 10, 2012 | Child Support

Former professional basketball star Dennis Rodman was back in court last week after falling behind in his child support payments. The judge ruled that Rodman was in contempt of court and instructed the star to pay $500,000 to his ex-wife to make up for his negligence in paying child support.

The judge deemed his current status as informal probation but noted that Rodman, who won three NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, could end up in jail if he doesn’t follow through in paying the back child support.

Initially, the attorneys for Rodman’s ex-wife were seeking $850,000, which they contended was the full amount of child support owed. But the two sides later agreed outside of court on the balance of half a million dollars.

According to his attorney, Rodman — who now lives in Florida — was unaware that he had been paying too little in child support. The attorney also noted to reporters that the judge praised Rodman for his community service in the past and demanded no jail time or additional community service for his latest offense.

Rodman has two pre-teen children with his most recent ex-wife, who became involved with Rodman after his divorce from model Carmen Electra. The two sides are still working to come up with a suitable child custody and visitation arrangement for the son and daughter.

If the two sides cannot reach an agreement prior to January 24, 2013, those custody arrangements will also be settled in court.
