Child support analysis includes data from Florida, nationally

Times are tough, and the economy is struggling in Florida and the rest of the nation. People are struggling to find work. and many people that do find employment are greatly underpaid.

This is currently demonstrated in the difficulties many people are having making child support payments for child custody agreements. A recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau outlines the financial problems. In 2009, only 61 percent of the $35 billion of child support payments owed were actually paid. Data also show that only 41.2 percent of custodial parents received the full amount of child support, which is down from 46.8 percent in 2007.

Child support payments have become increasingly important for many custodial parents to stay above the poverty line. In 2009, 28.3 percent of custodial parents fell below the poverty line, which is up from 23.4 percent in 2001. Since more than14 percent of the population falls below the poverty line, this means that custodial parents are almost twice as likely as the general population to be poor.

Although the U.S. Census Bureau report shows some of the financial struggles many custodial parents are facing, it offers no real solutions. Many parents are facing unemployment or underemployment and do not have the means to support their children.

Children need proper financial support for a stable and healthy home environment. While the report offers no solutions, it does remind its readers that single parent families are struggling and that they are not alone in their struggles.
