Get ready for summer child custody situations

On Behalf of | May 8, 2017 | Child Custody

School is almost out for the summer. This means that it is time for family vacations and other fun activities. For parents who don’t have custody of their children during the school year, this is a time when they usually get to spend more time with their children.

While this increase in time is a good thing since it gives them more time to build a relationship, it is also a time when planning reigns supreme. If you are dealing with a child custody situation, now is the time to think about what the summer months will entail.

Plan your vacations now

If you haven’t already planned your summer vacation, now is the time. Last minute plans are only a good idea if you know when you will have your children. You have to ensure that your travel dates won’t interfere with your ex’s time with the children. You also have to find out if there are any restrictions on travel. Some child custody orders only allow you to travel within the state or a certain distance with the children unless you have specific approval from either the other parent or the court.

Think about child care when school is out

You need to make plans now for child care if your child will need it while he or she is with you. This could mean hiring a babysitter, finding a daycare or summer care program or making plans with family members to watch the child. If you and your ex live close to each other, you might be able to use the method of child care that your ex usually uses.

Arrange for communication

Your child will need to communicate with your ex while he or she is with you. Make plans for this now so that you know what you will need to do. In some cases, such as if you are going on a vacation, video chats or similar methods of communication might work best so your child can show your ex different things from the vacation. In any case, you should make sure that you have a way for the child to contact the other parent.

Resolve conflicts early

If there are any issues with the child custody plan for the summer, you and your ex should get those resolved as soon as possible. This will take away the stress of having to come up with last minute plans. In the case of an issue that can’t be resolved amicably between you and your ex, you might have to seek out a resolution from the court.
