Child support modification: Follow these tips

On Behalf of | Nov 3, 2016 | Child Support

At some point, you may realize that you have no choice but to request a child support modification. Although this sounds confusing and although you may doubt that the court will agree, you should still move forward in the appropriate manner.

Here are some tips that can help you navigate the process with success:

— Don’t delay. If you are unable to make your child support payment, don’t wait any longer to request a modification. It’s better to act now than to continue to miss payments, as this will only make your situation worse.

— Reach out to the other parent. This may not be something you want to do, but it would be in your best interest. It is often best to work together outside of court than to go through litigation once again.

— Do the best you can for the meantime. If you are truly unable to make your full child support payment, you should pay as much as you can until a change is made.

Finally, submit your child support modification request with the court. You should file your request with the court that initially issued the order.

When it comes to matters of child support modification, there are many steps that you need to take. With these tips guiding you, it’s easier to understand what’s expected of you.

While there is no guarantee that the court will agree to a modification of your child support payment, backing up your claims with the right information and documentation could put you in better position in the future.
