It can help to think of marriage like a business

On Behalf of | Mar 24, 2016 | Prenuptial Agreements

Most people don’t think of marriage the same way that they think of running a business, primarily because of the involvement of love and related emotions. People think of business in a very professional sense, and it can even come across as cold and calculating. This isn’t the way that they want to look at a marriage, which is supposed to be one of the happiest times of their lives.

While the reasons for this seem clear, it’s worth noting that many professionals actually say that it’s very wise to look at marriage the same way you would look at business matters, seeing as how a marriage contract is a legally binding document.

For example, if a business partner came to you with a proposition and asked you to sign a piece of paper that you felt was unfair to you, in order to start the company together, would you do it? Most people quickly say that they would not, knowing that a contract should be fair so that they aren’t taken advantage of.

However, people will sometimes overlook a prenuptial agreement that is clearly unfair. They don’t want to upset the relationship or have the marriage cancelled, because they are in love, so they’ll sometimes sign agreements that they don’t actually want to sign.

The problem here is clear: After the prenup is signed, as long as it’s legally written, it’s a binding contract. Overlooking the unfair agreement in a marriage can be just as damaging as it would be in a business agreement.

A prenup can be quite useful, but make sure you know how to use one and what rights you have in Florida.
