Winning a child custody case requires being involved

Do you ever wish that you could be more involved in your children's lives? If so, you may really wish that were true if you're going through a divorce in Florida, as a lack of involvement can lead to the loss of your preferred custody situation.

This is an issue, for example, with professional athletes. They often have to travel extensively for their work. Some of them don't even live in the same places where the teams are located; for instance, an NFL player from Florida on a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks may not move his entire family to Seattle just for one season, but may live there alone for half of the year.

Even if you're not an athlete, though, this can definitely come into play. Traveling too much for work and not spending enough time with the children could prompt the judge to give custody only to your spouse. You may still have visitation rights when you're around, but that's not the same as having decision-making power.

Remember, the court wants what's best for your kids. You need to be there as a caregiver. You need to drive your children to school, to the doctor or to the shopping mall. You need to be around to eat dinner and spend quality time with them. The judge will usually not give you custody if you're just going to leave the children with a nanny or on their own all the time.

When going into a custody battle, make sure you know what the court is looking for and how to demonstrate that you should get custody rights.
