Divorce rates in Florida: 1990 to 2009

Florida residents have likely heard anecdotal information about the rate of divorce throughout the country. Most people say that divorce rates are rising, but statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau that compare divorce rates from 1990 and 2009 seem to indicate otherwise.

According to the numbers, divorce rates for the country in 1990 were 4.7 per 1,000 people; in 2009, that rate was 3.4 per 1,000. Divorce rates in Florida saw a similar drop over the 20 year period. The rate in 1990 was 6.3 per 1,000; in 2009, it was 4.2 per 1,000.

One factor that might be contributing to a lower divorce rate is a lower marriage rate. In 1990, the marriage rate for the country was 9.8 people getting married during the year for every 1,000 people. In 2009, that rate had dropped to 6.8 in 2009. Florida saw an even bigger drop in marriage rates over time period. The state marriage rate was 10.9 of 1,000 in 1990 and had dropped to 7.5 in 1,000 by 2009.

Whatever caused the lower divorce rate, it didn't stop divorce from happening completely. As long as people are entering into marriage, some couples are going to find that marriages don't work out. If you are one of those couples, then there are legal considerations that may be important to your future, no matter why you choose to end the relationship.

Some things to consider when getting divorced include property division, alimony, child support and child custody. These issues are not always as simple as they sound, and seeking third-party professional help in planning for a divorce and the future may enhance the chances of a positive outcome.
