Miami Heat star in child custody, support dispute

On Behalf of | Jun 26, 2012 | Child Support

Sometimes the buzz word most closely associated with a story concerning a rich professional athlete simply has to be “zany.”

Take the case of Miami Heat professional basketball player and long-time star Chris Bosh. Bosh and a girlfriend had a daughter three years ago, and he has since married another woman, with whom he has an infant son.

The child custody agreement between Bosh and his three-year-old daughter’s mother entitles Bosh to have custody of the child for 12 days each month. He has recently stated that he is being shortchanged on that, and details concerning the couple’s custody and child support arrangement came to light earlier this month after an Orlando judge denied Bosh’s request to take his daughter with him to London this summer while he participates on the U.S. Olympic basketball team.

Now the mother of Bosh’s daughter, who has just lost her job as a secretary for a construction company, is asking that the court look at and make an adjustment to the monthly child support payments that Bosh is making for his daughter.

Chris Bosh is reported to have an annual income of about $18 million a year. The attorney for his daughter’s mother says that state guidelines indicate that a person making that much money should be paying about $30,000 a month for support of a child.

Bosh isn’t presently paying quite that much. In fact, the $2,600 a month he is paying doesn’t equate to even 10 percent of that amount.

Bosh might well have an argument he wishes to make by way of a response, but persons representing him did not respond to a reporter’s calls or requests for comment.

As for the mother’s legal counsel, her views are clear and forthright.

“She’s about to get foreclosed on, he won’t help her and all he wants to do is go to London with his daughter,” she says. “Are you kidding?”
